 James Hickey, Psy.D., is a licensed psychologist in private practice in Brighton, MA. He holds a Master's Degree in Counseling Psychology from Lesley University (1985) in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and a Doctor of Psychology Degree from Antioch University New England (1996) in Keene, New Hampshire. After completing his Master's degree, Dr. Hickey worked for a psychiatric emergency services team performing assessments of people in crisis in clinics, schools, hospitals, and other community settings. He also worked for a community mental health clinic providing outpatient counseling to children, teenagers, and adults.
After returning to school for his Doctorate in psychology, Dr. Hickey trained at Newton-Wellesley Hospital, the Veterans Administration hospital in Bedford, MA., and at Seacoast Mental Health Center in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Among other areas of study, he received specific training and supervision in eating disorders, addictions, psychological testing, and short-term psychotherapy. In 1996 he received the Distinguished Graduate Student Award from the New Hampshire Psychological Association. Following graduation he began a career in correctional psychology, working with inmates in the Massachusetts state prison system. Dr. Hickey was an Associate in Psychiatry for the University of Massachusetts Medical School, and a member of the internship training program faculty. He served as the site director of mental health services at MCI Shirley and MCI Framingham for the UMASS Correctional Health program and also worked as a staff psychologist at the Massachusetts Treatment Center in Bridgewater and at MCI Cedar Junction in Walpole. In 2000 he received the award for Mental Health Director of the Year from the University of Massachusetts Medical School.
Dr. Hickey opened his private practice in Brighton, Massachusetts in 1992. As the practice grew Dr. Hickey gradually diminished his role and duties in the prison system. He is now in full-time private practice, where he sees teenagers, adults, and couples for psychotherapy. Dr. Hickey continues to challenge himself to grow as a professional by seeking out regular training and supervision opportunities. In addition to being a member in good standing with the Massachusetts and American Psychological Associations, Dr. Hickey is certified in clinical hypnosis by the American Association of Clinical Hypnosis.
